Range Rover Drive Cycle

Factory Range Rover Drive Cycle Procedure

It’s that time of the year again, vehicle registration. Yay, what fun! Depending on your local state emission laws, this could be annually or every two years. The older your Land Rover, the more frequent. The 8 steps listed in the above image show the factory recommended procedure for completion of a Range Rover Drive Cycle. This drive cycle is good for any Land Rover’s model year 2006 and newer (including the 2005 LR3, V8).

Range Rover Drive Cycle Steps

  1. Step One is to make sure your Land Rover is free of any fault codes. If any are present, perform the repairs necessary to eliminate any faults, especially “P” codes. These codes start with a P and usually are stored in the Engine Control Unit, Transmission Control Unit, Transfer Case Control Unit or Rear Differential Control Unit. A common P code is the P0455- Evaporative Emissions Large Leak Detected. The P stands for “Powertrain”.Best practice is to check for faults just before you start your Range Rover in the morning. This is will help the next step.
  2. Step Two is verification of the coolant temperature is below 140 degree or 60 Celsius. The Engine Control Unit will perform a test of the thermostat during warm up. To insure a complete drive cycle, make sure the engine temperature is correctly before starting your Range Rover. Morning drive cycles are great to insure temperature is within range.
  3. Step Three is the most important part of the Range Rover Drive Cycle, the road test. I have found best practice is to drive the speed limit and NOT FASTER THAN 50mph or 80km. Try to avoid hard acceleration. Basically, drive like your grandma. Hands at 10 and 2, use your blinker and give yourself plenty of braking distance. I usually drive about 10 mins in grandma mode on city streets. This will insure plenty of light accelerations.

Next, find a road where you can drive 50 mph without any stops for a solid 2 minutes. I enter the highway low lane for this. At the 2 minute marker, let off the gas and cruise to a stop without using the brake. Once stops, release the brake and let your Range Rover start crawling without using the gas pedal. Do this for about a minute. Done.

Hook up to your Range Rover with an approve OBD 2 hand held scanner or the factory equipment. Check your emission monitors. In California, you will need to pass 4 key tests. O2 Sensor Heater Monitor, O2 Sensor Performance Monitor, Catalyst Efficiency Monitor and Evaporative Emissions Monitor.
